The BASS Spot A Learning Home for Adult Learners

An online learning community needed a platform that felt welcoming, not like regular school. In 3 weeks I built a WordPress membership site where one free sign-up opens classes, a research library and a community.

The Brief

School Didn’t Fit Them. The Website Had To.

The BASS Spot is for adult learners who are catching up, starting fresh or building their reading, writing and digital skills, with Masters-level instructors and a teaching approach that honours Black language, knowledge and experience. Its promise is simple: “When regular school isn’t enough… The BASS Spot makes YOU enough.”

Natasha needed a platform that kept that promise from the first screen: warm instead of institutional, simple for someone new to online learning, and with classes, a research library and community discussions all behind one free membership.

What success looked like

  • More free member sign-ups
  • A warm, premium learning brand
  • Classes and library easy to find
  • A community that brings people back
  • Mobile-friendly and accessible
  • Fast pages and strong SEO
The Challenge → The Solution

Six Barriers. Six Open Doors.

Every problem that stopped a learner from joining got a specific fix.

  1. Outdated designThe site felt dated and institutional, like the school learners had left behind.
A warm, premium lookBlack, gold and cream, with a hero that speaks to the learner: “When regular school isn’t enough…”
  2. Unclear navigationClasses, articles and tools were hard to tell apart and harder to find.
Choose Your PathLibrary, Classes and Resources as three clear doors, from the homepage and the menu.
  3. Low membership sign-upsVisitors looked around but had no clear reason or route to join.
Free sign-up, front and centre“Become a member” on every key screen, backed by a simple 3-step How It Works.
  4. Scattered contentLearning material had no consistent structure, so it was hard to keep adding to.
An organised library and classesArticles, journals and research tools in the Library; guided classes and live seminars in Classes.
  5. Limited on mobileMany learners study on their phones, and the old site didn’t work well there.
Mobile-first learningReading, classes and discussions laid out for phones first, with large, easy tap targets.
  6. Weak calls to actionNothing invited learners to take part, so they visited once and left.
Community built inGeneral Discussions, Course Discussions, a Research Hub and Announcements, one menu away.
The Outcome

One Free Login. Everything They Need.

What a new member gets the moment they join.

3Learning paths: Library, Classes and Resources
4Community spaces, from course talk to a Research Hub
